Shouldn’t there just be two verdicts when it comes to tasting wine?… “Good wine and crap wine” Granted this information is not exactly insightful or very helpful when describing a bottle of wine. However, I think before one goes overboard in describing a wine and use phrases like ‘cocoa, vegetal, red fruits etc’; shouldn’t they at least say if they like the wine (good wine) or not (crap wine). OK, I’ll also include a middle ground called ‘OK’ (no pun inteded). I do however think the use of the word OK should be limited. Just check out this old Honda ad as to why 😛 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfojHsP0L1I
I try to keep my wine tasting notes simple so it is easy for everyone (including myself) to understand. Please do note that I have no formal wine training nor taken any wine related exams. I am just a wine lover who enjoys wine and write what I can taste from a glass. My notes are categorised as:
1) Smell: The flavours I get when I put my nose into the a wine glass. Most of the fruity aromas are sensed here
2) Taste: The texture of the wine, the concentration (body of a wine) and most importantly the balance
3) Finish: This is the lingering after taste. This depends on the style of the wine the wine maker intended and also the age of the wine. Some good wines have a very short aftertaste because they were made in that style but all great wines should have a long aftertaste. I quantify this in seconds with a good aftertaste of c20 seconds+
At the end of the day, I encourage everyone to taste as many and as much wine as possible. A wine maker friend told me that Master of Wines (MW) are great because they taste a lot of different wines (and remember them!), so happy tasting!
